While it might be construed as blasphemy in certain circles, I actually don't really care all that much for Judy Garland, or "Over the Rainbow" as a song. The idea of it is nice, but I think I only really look at it as a pretty song, and that's it. Nothing too deep.
In the original movie, there's a song called "Optimistic Voices." I love it. The lyrics are what will make you realize what song I'm talking about.
You're out of the woods
You're out of the dark
You're out of the night

Hold onto your breath
Hold onto your heart
Hold onto your hope
March up to the gate
And bid it open--
You're out of the woods
You're out of the dark
You're out of the night
Step into the sun
Step into the light
March up to the gate
And bid it open!--open!
Anyone have thoughts?

Optimistic Voices is a pretty little song. I always liked it. There is a youtube clip that I would highly recommend to you...
Over The Rainbow is perfection. Judy Garland singing it is beyond perfection. Watch that scene of the movie again not that you're a little older. Then (if you happen to have a wonderful boyfriend who would be happy to help you out with this) listen to Garland sing the song in concert as an adult. Pretty much the definition of depth. Beauty, innocence, yearning, desire, sadness. All there. Not spelled out for you of course. The lyrics to Over The Rainbow are not as clear a message as Optimistic Voices. But when you combine the lyrics with the melody and the context of which the song is sung, along with Garland's vocals, there is so much there. I promise you, the song is worth your attention and I wouldn't want you to overlook it.
After Angela Date, maybe you may do me a favor and give Judy a chance. One date to explain.
